A little about digital storytelling

I am so thankful for the encouragement and direction I had from my instructors, Joanne Kelly and Forde Oliver. Digital Storytelling is one of the courses I had the privilege of taking during the second year of the Creative Communications program. The class joined together two specializations, Journalism and Media Productions, and we were sent out in groups to cover stories happening around Winnipeg over the course of the year. The stories should be timely, relevant, and of public interest. I had such an amazing time filming these stories, and I am so thankful for my classmates – teammates – who helped make these stories come to life.

2021 Stella’s Strike

Stella’s is a restaurant chain in Winnipeg, MB that has had a number of scandals throughout the years.

Employees of Stella’s Sherbrook stand outside the closed café, picketing for better, safer, and fairer working conditions.

The restaurant’s union is bargaining for changes in scheduling practices, removal of table transfers, and wage increases.

Staff are calling for the community to boycott Stella’s locations across the city which are currently open for business.

Thistle Curling Club

Curling Canada released their Return-to-Play guidelines in September, but some teams are only sweeping across the ice this week.

Thistle Curling Club hosted their first Thursday League Night this week, and teams are ready to start the season.

Although many are excited to get back to the sport, some feel the game is not the same with the current guidelines.

“It’s such a social sport,” says Evan Peters in between games. “We’re all wearing masks and socially distancing, but even grabbing a drink after the game just doesn’t feel the same.”

Parlor Tattoo

They say three times a charm, but not when it comes to fines and public health violations.

Phil McLellan, owner of The Parlor Tattoos on Main Street, received his third fine today for staying open against public health orders.

McLellan said that as a business owner, staying closed is no longer an option.

"Am I to sell my home? Am I to find another job in a career that I have worked 37 years in? They're telling me to just wait two weeks, but they keep dragging it on," said McLellan.

Small business owners such as McLellan don't have the option to receive some of the government's grants for funding, which puts him in a tough position, especially when Winnipeg's code red restrictions were extended.

"Small businesses can't take this much longer," said McLellan.

I have to say, this was one of the most stressful stories I had to do, and not because I had to switch stories halfway through the day, but because I really thought I was going to get fined for even being in the space. It was nerve-wracking how the health inspectors took photos of me from outside – as if to make it seem like I was there to receive a tattoo.
